Minaret in the Old Town of Rhodes

3/15/10
quick shot in the winding streets of the Old Town in Rhodes, which surrounds the Palace of the Knights from the previous day's pic. Very touristy of course but still charming; the minaret is a remnant of the long Turkish occupation of Greece, one of the reasons the Greeks to this day despise the Turks, a real problem as they are neighbours (Rhodes is only a few miles from the Turkish coast), one of the reasons (along with an appaling human rights record) that Turkey's still not managed to join the EU yet.

amazing colours!
re: it was a just a broken window but -oh! so beautiful seen from very near, intoa snowstorm

Wow! Those bricks do turn a lovely color in the sun. Great to see places with so much history.

Have fun in the snow on the way up to Inverness!

Great colours in your Turco-Greek edifice, Joe. Did you know that Turkey's grand old man, Mr. Kemal Ataturk, was in fact born into a Greek family of Thessaloniki? And yet all this animosity continues . . .

P.S. Saw your response on your previous page just now - where in NL did you stay? In my home town there used to be a fair amount of expat Brits, Irishmen and Scots people in the early 80s. Some came for work, study or love. But most of them came for the beer ;-)

It's a place which is in my top 10 list of places to visit soon

Hope you have a great week

Take care
