Be grateful for what you have

1/31/10
Sometimes it feels like life’s a bitch. Everything seems absolutely wrong, and it feels really unfair. Then we ask: “Why me? “ “Why now?” But we never think: “Why not me?” I wonder what makes us so special to be safe from tragedies.

It’d be amazing if everything was fine, if we had the perfect life. Who wouldn’t like to be wealthy, or famous, or gorgeous, or brilliant, or talented, or successful, or loved, or even healthy? We would love to have everything we want, but we mostly don’t, and we must consider ourselves lucky if, at least, we get what we need.

How many times we thank for what we have? And how many we complain for what we don’t have? It’s actually quite selfish and ungrateful. We should be happy to wake up every morning, to have something to eat, to have a home, to have friends, to have a family, to be healthy, to have a blanket we can cover with. But for us it’s so usual to have some of the things that we don’t even notice they are there.

Mostly we think that life is a right; that we actually deserve to have it. We couldn’t be more wrong. Life is borrowed, and we’d have to return it sometime, we should live without regrets, without waiting for the perfect time, for the perfect person, for the perfect job, the perfect car, or the perfect house. We are so used to say “later” or “tomorrow” but maybe later we won’t be able to do or say what we wanted, maybe we won’t wake tomorrow. And then we would say “why didn’t I…?”

So this is an invitation to live, not just walk through life, but actually live a life. Tell the people you love that you in fact love them; go to do the craziest thing you ever thought about, talk to that special person, go to that special place, write a letter, make a phone call, paint your room, rearrange your furniture. Take every day as an opportunity to do something special instead of waiting for the special to come to you.

To live your life plenty, you first need to know what are you going to live for.
